Who wants to be in a car that smells of stale air, last night’s hamburger drive-through dinner or a pet’s dirty paws?
Choosing the best air freshener for the car can be confusing, because there are plenty of different ones. We’ve narrowed the list down to two of the overall best air fresheners for cars.
Freshen Your Car
Evergreen-shaped fresheners called Little Trees are infused with dozens of scent varieties. I even use these in my home closets. Some people, though, say they smell too much like commercial cleaning products.
Febreze makes vent clip-on fresheners. These come in a variety of scents that eliminate odors. They smell great, but you need the vents to be on to use them.
Chemical Guys makes an odor neutralizer in the form of a spray for your car. Its concentrated formula takes just one spray to freshen the car’s interior. The product can last for years. Some say the scent is too strong and its longevity is a minus, not a plus.
Ozium Smoke & Odors Eliminator Gel comes in a container that has a twist top with vents you turn to control the level of odor control. This product really helps get rid of cigarette smoke odors in the car. It has a lemony smell that some people dislike.
PURGGO Car Air Freshener is made with bamboo charcoal to neutralize smells without disturbing the environment. People love its long life, but it has to be periodically exposed to the sun to be reactivated.
Reviews of the Best Air Freshener for Cars
There are two car air fresheners that work best. While the Febreze product gently blows a pleasant fragrance throughout the car’s interior, the PURGGO works by absorbing smells passively.
Febreze Car Vent-Clip Air Freshener
This car deodorizer is simple to use. You clip it onto the car’s air vent and when either air conditioning or fresh air flows through, so does the fresh scent.
The Febreze vent clips have a little tab on top, letting you adjust the vents on it to let out as little or as much fragrance as you want. The clips feature 18 different scents.
They are relatively inexpensive and come in single or multi-packs of 2 or 4.

PURGGO Car Air Freshener
PURGGO is made from 100% bamboo charcoal and hemp, both renewable natural resources. This type of charcoal freshener has been used for centuries in Asia to cleanse the air naturally. The product must be activated before use by setting it in the sun to absorb heat.
This deodorizer that hangs from the headrest’s back and looks like a pillow. It contains no fragrances, making it safe for allergy sufferers. It lasts for more than a year, making it one of the longest lasting car air fresheners around.

Febreze Car Vent-Clip Air Fresheners
These air fresheners for cars are a good value for their inexpensive cost and the great variety of fragrances you have to choose from.
- Very little space is needed to use them
- They attach quickly and are adjustable
- They last about 30 days, but it’s not costly to replace them
- These are made specifically for an automobile environment
- Best when used with air conditioning or fresh air fans working at full force
PURGGO Car Air Freshener
If you want your money spent on a car freshener that lasts a long time, this product is a great value. Some other perks that go along with purchasing this PURGGO freshener:
- It is an ecologically sound air purifier
- Use it safely in children’s rooms near diaper areas
- If you don’t like it hanging on the headrest, you can place it anywhere else in the car
- It will last for at least 365 days.
- In less stale car environments, it may last up to 2 years
- It’s good packaged for a long time, until activated.
Though both the Febreze Car Vent Clips and the PURGGO Car Air Fresheners definitely make a car’s environment smell fresher, I preferred the PURGGO.
Car odors can vary from a faint staleness to a nasty odor that is hard to get rid of. Since the PURGGO absorbs odors instead of masking them, I chose this over the Febreze.
Also, the PURGGO fresheners last much, much longer than the Febreze. Although the Febreze clips cost less in the short term, in the long run, with replacements every month, that cost evens out when compared with the charcoal freshener.
For the environment, natural ingredients and its longevity, the PURGGO Car Air Freshener is my pick for making my car a pleasure to ride in.
